What To Wear For Your Engagement Session
By June Pearlwick · Updated for the 2026 season
"What should we wear?" is the question every couple asks and every photographer loves, because the answer genuinely changes the gallery. The rules are few, and none of them involve buying anything new.
Texture Over Logos
Knit, linen, denim, wool — texture photographs beautifully, while large logos and neon prints shout over your faces. Solid, muted tones keep the attention where it belongs. One pattern between you at most; two patterns start arguing.
Movement Over Stiffness
A dress that moves in the wind will earn you ten frames you frame. A starched outfit that fights sitting, hugging and hill-climbing will earn you fidgeting. Choose the thing you can laugh in — sessions involve more laughing than standing.
Bring The Second Outfit
One elevated look, one everyday-you look. Start polished, end comfortable — the second half of every session is always the loosest, and jeans-and-boots energy produces a completely different, equally frameable gallery. Bonus: it doubles your save-the-date options.
