A Golden-Hour Timeline That Actually Works

By June Pearlwick · Updated for the 2026 season

Newlyweds embracing as the sun sets behind them

Every couple wants the golden portraits. Almost none plan for them — and then dinner runs long, the sun drops, and the opportunity quietly expires. Here's the timeline trick I build into every Signature wedding, and it has never once failed.

Find Your Sunset, Then Work Backwards

Look up sunset for your date and venue, then protect the thirty minutes before it like a ceremony. That half hour is non-negotiable portrait time — soft, directional, forgiving light that makes everyone look like the best version of themselves.

Serve Dinner Into The Light

The classic mistake: portraits at 6, dinner at 6:30, sunset at 7:45 while everyone's seated. Instead, start dinner earlier and plan the "stolen fifteen" — slip out between courses while guests are happily eating. Nobody notices you're gone; everybody notices the photographs.

Set A Sunset Alarm

On the day, joy eats schedules. I set a quiet alarm for twenty minutes before sunset and simply appear at your table: "It's time." Couples always thank me. The dance floor will wait; the sun will not — that asymmetry is the whole job.
