Ethan & Marie

Pine chapel & timber barn · September

Black and white photograph of the couple kissing at the altar

Cathedral Light

The chapel seats eighty and the pines outside seat the sky. Ethan and Marie married at four o'clock, when the sun slants straight through the west windows and lays bars of light across the aisle — the kiss happened exactly inside one of them, as if the building had rehearsed it.

We shot this wedding the way it felt: quiet, reverent, a little cinematic. The forest portraits after the ceremony are all hush and height — two small figures under very old trees, her bouquet the only bright thing for a mile. Presented here in black and white, the way the couple chose to remember it.

Then the timber barn, and restraint went out the door: a nine-piece brass band, a cake cut with a pocketknife, Ethan crowd-surfed by his groomsmen while Marie conducted. Reverence and ruckus — the full register.

"The chapel frames look like film stills. Our grandchildren will think we hired a movie crew."
